debbie4god39

thought it would increase the speed it picks up the signal but not the
signal itself.....anyone have experience with this?    Thanks!

What do they mean by "stronger" modem, I wonder?

Certainly a new modem could make things worse, as could
changing your Internet speed or switching between DSL and
cable.  I have very recent, first-hand experience with this,
although I'm continuing to experiment to find the most
tolerable solution for me.  The current winner is:

  -- DSL at 1.5Mbps download/768kbps upload

-- DSL has it's own separate outside wiring/inside jack,
with all other phone jacks in the house filtered
     at the outside phone box

  -- TP-LINK 8840T DSL modem (a bit surprising, since
this is an all-plastic case, looks cheaply made, and
     has a switching power supply)

But I've got more stuff on order, and more testing to do...

I had a thought that "stronger" might actually mean that it's using
a newer technology than your current modem.  In the cable Internet
world, there are different versions of "DOCSYS" (version 1, 2, and 3),
and the cable companies are always trying to get you to upgrade
to the latest version.  This could increase your speed, and since
the cable companies are pushing it, there must be something in it
for them as well.

So I would guess that you probably have DOCSYS 2.0 modem
right now, and they are trying to get you to upgrade to a
DOCSYS 3.0 modem.  I have no experience in the difference
between these two types of modems, but as part of my current
trade in cable vs DSL internet, I will probably try both types
out to see if there is any difference that I notice.
