USB Computer Speakers vs. wired

steve
Hey all,

Are USB powered computer speakers better or worse than plugged in speakers for ES?
I was going to ask the IT guy at work to replace the plugged in speakers at work because they have a subwoofer and whenever the speakers are plugged in there is a loud buzzing sound that drives me nuts. I always unplug them when I am in this shared office but it would be nice to be able to use speakers at times.
Thanks

Is the buzzing sound a ground loop (60 hz hum)?  I find that ground loops make my ES worse.

I dumped my "computer speakers" (with subwoofer, connected to headphone output on PC, and with it's own DC transformer), and replaced them with a mini-stereo system and "regular stereo speakers".  So that got rid of an AC/DC transformer, and a subwoofer.  I think the new system is more tolerable overall, and sounds better too (although without as much bass).

A lot of the mini amps these days are "Class D", which is also terrible for ES.  The old-fashioned Class A or Class B amps are much more tolerable (but are large and hot)

That's what the buzz sounds like it is coming from. I unplug the system whenever I'm in the office
They have  speaker systems that plug into the USB ports for power, are those considered safe?

I have no experience with USB speakers, maybe somebody else here does.

The worse thing about the speakers is their power supply (which emit high ELF magnetic field, 1-2 meter safety distance).
I usually use only USB powered speakers since they have no power supply.
All the best

I hope this info helps.
