Hi all,
Okay, so I got no responses to my question about a tolerable Blu-ray player,
so I went on an eBay buying spree and found the answer to my own question. :-)
I now have 5 Blu-ray players in my house, from various brands and years of
production. The winner of tolerability test is (not suprisingly) the oldest
of the players -- a Sony BDP-S1. This thing is huge. Heavy. Slow response
times. No ethernet connection. No zooming function. No wi-fi. No
oncreen display showing current disc playback statistics. Heck, it doesn't
even play CDs!
HOWEVER, it is the most tolerable Blu-ray player I've tried of the
bunch ("the bunch" consisting of 2 Sony's, 1 Panasonic, 1 Oppo, and 1
Popcorn Hour). Making it possibly the only one I'll feel comfortable
using.
Note that I never had any problem with any DVD player. I think there's
something about either the Blu-ray drives or the video processing chips
that's causing me problems with most Blu-ray players.
The Sony BDP-S1 originally sold for US$999 when it was released in 2006.
I bought mine for $60 on eBay. :-)
If after continued use I end up changing my mind about this model,
I'll let you all know.
And if I couldn't find a tolerable Blu-ray player, I already had a
"Plan B" which I've proved to myself is tolerable. Buy a Blu-ray
disc. Copy the contents to a hard drive using your computer and
DVD/Blu-ray ripping software. Playback on the TV using a tolerable
media player. For me, a tolerable media player is the Popcorn
Hour A-100, A-100, DragonTech 100HD. An INTOLERABLE media player
is the Popcorn Hour C-200.
