There has been many threads on this before. I have been researching on this in recent days. Last year one of my chargecard sent a chipped card, after assuring me they would make "reasonable accommodation" and not send it. I was unaware that they did till I opened the envelope and my fingers were on the chip when I got a shock and the card fell out when I dropped the contents. I had someone there at the time who took the scissors and cut away a good portion of the card:leaving the numbers and strip. The rest the night my hand was not right: I could not grab the pen or fork without my fingers contorting funny. It was all OK again the next day. I do not try to use the card often, but just add my ID and explain the reason for the hole, when I do.
Supposedly there is some law requiring all banks have these chips-I am not sure I buy that-I think it's more of trying to get everyone to conform to some new tech, just like the smart meter roll outs.
Since then I have been speaking w/ my regular bank that I have been happy with for years, to get reasonable accommodation. Again they say it's a govt. requirement. I have spoken w/ people in the chip dept. and they say the tech in their chip is different than the other charge card I have. The other card is an RFID chip and has an antenna! My bank uses a contact only card and requires contact with a circuit. Of course I have been doing homework on it before this and there are 2 kinds of chips: "contactless"-transmits bad and "contacted"-requires direct contact to connect.
Would like some input on this from you guys, as it seems all chips are not equal. But I am not sure any are safe without more research.
Thanx
