Hello, I am a 25 year old male with chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivities, and various unexplained neurological problems. I too ill to work except from home. I do all of my work on a computer. I recently decided to upgrade from dial-up internet access to Verizon DSL. They sent me a wireless modem/router. From the moment I turned it on, I felt sick: an anxious or wired feeling, burning sensation in the chest, confusion and difficulty concentrating, dizziness and nausea. The exact same symptoms happened again several times I tried using the modem. Today I had to use it for 45 minutes, and I actually ended up vomiting. (I never vomit.) I disabled wireless on my setup so that the modem is no longer supposed to have wireless capability, i.e. it presumably won't be broadcasting microwave radiation anymore. Now when I use it, it doesn't make me feel as severely sick -- but I still get some of the same symptoms, just not as intense. I wonder if it is still sending out a signal of some kind, or if I'm just electrically sensitive to the modem itself, even without the wireless feature. Has anybody had a problem with sensitivity to modems, specifically the newer DSL modems? I know the problems I'm having aren't psychosomatic. Should I just send the new modem back and go back to dial-up? Thanks, Freebird |

Hmmmm, I've never noticed anything specific with my DSL modem, although it does not have any wireless capability. I would think that you could overcome this problem by putting the modem further away from you, or using some sort of EMF protection device near it to make the radiation feel less harmful. Marc |
Hello,
wireless modems are just as bad as wireless house phones. They both are giving pulsed signals, which go very far (as far as 300 meters). There are even new computers with build-in wireless, which you only can shut-off via the motherboard or the BIOS. Hi, My ES husband had very similar reactions to our Airport Base Station (the Mac version of a wireless router, attached to a high-speed cable modem rather than DSL). Sudden bad headache, weakness, nausea, etc., especially when he came within a few feet of the laptop that was picking up the wireless signal. We experimented with turning off my Airport card (the card inside the laptop that allows it to pick up the wireless signal) and that seemed to help, but it made us very uneasy to think that the base station (router) was still on, all the time, transmitting its signal. We finally just decommissioned the whole thing, and now I surf the Internet through a wire. It's not so bad. We're still using the cable modem (high speed), not dial-up. I honestly think this step has helped reduce the ES symptoms a little.
