Suggestion for a low cost meter that is better than the tri-field meter?

onceagain
I need a meter for electric fields that is much better than the tri-field meter and also isn't very expensive. Any suggestions?

BiBrun
If you have a good digital multi-meter, you can measure
electric fields by securing the probes to two balls of
foil, at some distance (like a foot or 2 apart).

If you have a high impedance amplifier like the old
"telephone listeners" you can make a probe from
an old set of headphones or whatever that can
plug into the input jack, and just separate the wires
a few inches.  Then you can hear the fields.

What setting do I put the multi-meter on to do this?
