Shielding a Laptop

phleagol
Hi all, I have just discovered this forum. I am not as EHS as some of you, since I am affected chiefly by laptops, PCs, wifi, TVs. That said, I am writing this on an HP Mini 210 netbook. Indeed, it is the only PC I have used which I can tolerate for hours.

That said, netbooks don't last forever, and I am not made of money. A family member recently gave me a recent Toshiba Satellite laptop. It is beautiful, but yet it is also very strong with the emf. I have tried shielding it in various ways with aluminium foil/mesh, but have learnt how useless aluminium is for shielding. Of course, I could ditch the laptop, and get a standard PC in a metal box, but the emf flux from the last external monitor I tried using was astonishing. Indeed, I surmise that the emf from the LCD of a laptop will be much less than that of an external monitor. But either way, no solution I choose will be perfect.

This webpage suggests shielding the base of the laptop in a narrow 5-sided enclosure. The material they suggest using is Mu-metal foil. Perhaps later, I could also get a transparent emf shield to further reduce flux from the laptop screen. I would of course be using an external keyboard and mouse.

So I ask, has anyone else here tried shielding a laptop in this way? If so, how successful was it? Is my thought process here sound, or am I just a dreamer? Is there a cheaper substitute for Mu-metal that might be sufficient - I don't work, so yes, the expense does matter. Sorry, but I am not yet experienced in the ways of shielding.

In short, if this shielding solution is doable then I will keep the laptop, elsewise I will have to ditch it. So yes, I look forward to your responses.

Thanks. But what shielding material is your laptop tray made from. Did you go with the mu-metal foil, or are there better options to consider?
