This is probably one for shivani - Headline in paper THE METER THAT
WILL PULL THE PLUG ON WRONG BILLS ? The SMART METER fOR BOTH GAS AND ELECTRICITY - These can be monitored electronically by utility companies so they do not need to be read in person ! Only 3000 will be installed in next 2 yrs, the article neglects to say wether these are of the wireless variety ? Should we be worried ? Oh in same article also launched yesterday little boxes the size of a cigerette packet that you put in your car so that you can pay for parking with a mobile phone rather than a coin. Senseless Moneymaking and Risky Technology - Thats what I call smart ! Somebody HELP !!!!! |
FYI I have a smart meter on my house for my gas line, it's wired to
my telephone line, and calls in the data every once in a while. Nothing wireless. That doesn't mean they won't use wireless technology for YOUR smart meter, but not all smart meters are wireless. Fortunately after much dialog with my power company, they told me they
did have a program where they would come out and replace my wireless radiation producing meter (a 2800 foot blast radius every 30 seconds) with a meter that hooked into my phone line and called once a month to the power company and sent my usage numbers over the phone (with no radiation emission) for an extra $5 a month. Great deal for me. They said that they weren't promoting that program and that is why they didn't initially make it available. So, there are options for us ES in North Carolina at least with the power company. I even have gotten a few neighbors to change their radiation meters to the phone line! The crazy part to me is it would seem to save them a tremendous amount of manpower costs to go to a phone line rather than have meter readers driving around picking up signals. Isn't money the main motivator for big companies? Andrew,
VERY smart move. I had the gas company out at my house too. They replaced the entire metering system with a digital one that is auto-polled for usage. The data is tranmitted via phone line or remote polling. Automic metering systems are not just saving us. They could save Natural Gas companies millions of dollars. There is an effective metering system which (Hatch Associaties of Toronto) are the best engineers I know designing this. It is NOT to save our health though, it is to save money on usage by buyingfrom the gas exchange, nominations they are called, for the amount of NG needed in increments of time. Automatic metering can save, save, save, but the cost of implementation, especially after deregulation, does not make it cost effective. It is cheaper to hire peopleto go out and read meters. If automated metering were to occur, it would end of saving NG companies inthe long term as they would buy their gas as consumption volumes requires. They would not have to nominate a volume at .08, first transaction event, then sell excess at .05, end of transaction event for the volume. Money....money, money, money, money, money.... This is a very good point, Garth. Thanks for bringing forward the destinction. Once there
is the ability to take information via copper wire, aka, telephone, there is the possibility to fit for remote readings along radio spectrum I believe. This is where the guy sits in his truck, within a vicinity, he pings, sends out an identifying signal, once the siganl is received, he can then "poll" the meters remotely. Not many have gone completely wireless. I don't know of many. But the advantage of having these meters with digital technology equiped, data in / data out, they can alert to abnormal usage patterns...for example....a leak. Thanks for bringing that up. I always loved meter projects. They just made so much sense to me and in the Pipeline business, that is almost all we can use. What power company are you with? I got no cooperation at all from
Dominion Power in Virginia. No replies from letters or phone calls. I refused to let the workers install the wireless meter, so they sent out a burly redneck guy that wouldn't take no for an answer. Said the customer doesn't have a choice. I am in england, a company called edf governs these installations. I hear
that the smart meters are a real for ES sufferers. Redneck or not I will fight them on the beaches if I have to ! regards Paul [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |
