The field from the heater in the water bed will disappear instantly when
you unplug the heater from the outlet - unless the cord picks up current from
being near a current source.
If you heat the water during the day, when you are not there, it should
stay warm all night.
I used to have a waterbed. I just put a thick insulating pad over the
water bag, and never heated it at all. This will save quite a bit of
energy, too.
