Re: [Immune] what health care provision is there for a poor single woman

Elysia Drew
Hi, Courtenay. I'm a lot sicker & am worried they are about to turn the 4G tower on in Silver City where I am. BUT I would've died if I'd stayed in Maine w/ the Smart Meters. I am homeless right now, & really sensitive to synthetic fabrics so can't sleep in a regular tent anymore. This coffee shop is open until 11pm on Saturday nites for some reason, so I was glad to find a question I was capable of answering, b/c at this point I know a lot about what's available for poor single women (w/o children).

Elysia - where are you living right now? I am sorry you are dealing with that - do you have a safe enough place to stay in the meantime?

I, too, am a poor single woman w/ no dependents. Just thought I'd fill you in about the programs in the 2 states I know about:

Maine: A poor, single woman can get food stamps, but I think you have to have kids to be on welfare. It's easier to get on Medicaid in Maine than in New Mexico (where I am now) but that's quickly changing because of Maine's crappy governor, LePage. Anyway, in 2008 I was able to get on MaineCare (Maine's version of Medicaid) after about an 8 months' wait. I was put onto "full" MaineCare under "non-categorical eligibility" because I was not yet recognized as disabled. But there isn't any kind of "welfare assistance" or "cash assistance" for poor single people in Maine, as far as I know.

New Mexico: You can get Food Stamps and "Cash Assistance," which they now call "General Assistance," which means you end up living on $400/month, including food stamps (this can be very difficult if you have malabsorption like me, b/c you end up spending all your money on healthy food). Other problem is it's a 2 year wait to get on Medicaid for poor singles, so you end up having very limited medical care, w/ a sliding scale called Hidalgo Medical Services (HMS), where it's basically $20 each time you go to the doctor or dentist, and there's NOTHING available in terms of specialists for the kinds of conditions we have (MCS, EHS, Lyme, CFIDs etc.) On the plus side, if you're homeless, it takes only 4-6 months to qualify for HUD (housing assistance) Homelessness Prevention Program, and a single person gets a $500/month rent voucher (that includes rent & utilities) and everything is at least $450 and not very liveable for EIs. It's basically been impossible
so far for me to find a place that isn't too close to cell phone towers & crammed in with other peoples' (formaldehyde) trailers, but it's possible to "luck out" and find a place w/ a  big yard. HUD WILL let you pitch a tent on your property. Detractor is that HUD requires you to have a stove, and running water & heat & electricity. I am currently re-applying for HUD. It's very difficult for people in general to find a place, and almost impossible for EI people to find a place on HUD, but at least you can qualify for the HUD Homelessness Prevention Program in 4-6 months instead of waiting YEARS like people have to in states like California. I think you can also get a tiny bit of annual heating & gas assistance, but I think it's just 1 monthly payment once a year. The people I know out here whose gas & heating etc. are covered by gov't are already on SSI or SSD, but maybe I'm wrong @ that. That's everything I know about this topic. Hope it helps.

Love & blessings,
Elysia

Re: [Immune] what health care provision is there for a poor single woman

Cheryl Griffing-2
Hi,

I don't know if I can help much here but will try anyway.

To my knowledge both food stamps and welfare are available to everyone, even if they don't have kids. I know for sure that is true here in Los Angeles and I think it it this way all over US. There is also a new health insurance program that I believe is called "healthy Living". It is income based and easy to qualify for. A gym pal of mine has just applied and giving me info on exactly what it covers as he learns about it himself. It is for all of USA. It is free. I have no insurance either so I will apply also. I don't think there is any waiting period to receive care.

I can imagine that homelessness can be very difficult. Awhile back I was almost there myself. I knew a homeless lady at our gym that spent all day there and slept in her car at night. Gym memberships can be very inexpensive. I find I feel great at the gym in spite of my E.S. For her it was a place to hang out and shower, as well as exercise. Some gyms are open 24/7. Just a thought. There is no limit on how many hours you can spend there.

You may be able to qualify for disability. I know ES doesn't qualify us but you may have some health problems that do. A therapist recently told me that arthritis qualifies people for disability. Worth checking out but of course you will need health insurance or a way to pay a doctor to fill out the needed forms.

Elysia, you mentioned malabsorption. I most likely have that too. Is yours due to hyper-thyroid? Mine most likely is. Does your hair grow? Mine never does and I think it is due to this. I know what you mean as I also have to eat very healthy foods due to this condition. I still find them very inexpensively. Don't know if you have any 'Fresh and Easy" stores near you. They discount all their fresh foods with that days date on them by 65-85% to sell by the end of the day. I do very well there on this. Many other stores discount dated items as well. By bargain shopping I feed the 2 of us on less than $150 monthly and we both eat a lot.

Best of luck with your situation.

Cheryl
