Dear Beau,
I have had this idea of getting better grounding for my own body by running a wire from an electrical ground rod in the ground into my home and to a ground strap (antistatic strap I normally used to fix computer boards) that I could wear when I sit by my computer. I was curious with your knowledge of electricity if any impact this may have on EMF around my computer, or my bodies natural electrical systems? Please send me whatever questions you have. from your description it is possible your grounding has been compromised. I've been in buildings where the grounding was poor which caused the wiring to radiate EM more strongly. Getting proper grounding definitely helps but can't eliminate EM emissions altogether. The power company may have also placed a new, heavy electrical load (a new major energy consumer, perhaps) on your part of the grid . Changing loads can make the whole power circuit behave differently. The surges you referred to are reminiscent of a cycling load somewhere on your power circuit, like pumps or something similar. It could also be a combination of power usage by different houses, etc., that created what's known as a 'modulation envelope'. (http://www.tpub.com/content/neets/14184/css/14184_81.htm) This electrical signal envelope has it's own frequency and effects that are measurable. Beau |
Dear Glenn,
I have no experience in the anti-static ground strap/ground rod application you're considering. It sounds *very hazardous*, especially for an ES person. Achieving proper grounding for/around powered systems is very dependent on the conditions of the site and the type of system you're working with. And, to my knowledge, anti-static ground straps are designed for use only with non-powered equipment. Here are some thoughts around what may create hazards, but again I emphasize I'm no expert around this topic. * Difference in voltage between home ground rod and personal ground rod. * Creating an antenna directly connected to your body. * Picking up stray voltage from nearby power lines. * Picking up signals from home wiring system more strongly -- either directly through contact if using home ground. -- or indirectly from reception of radiated signal. I wouldn't attempt what you're considering without directly consulting an electrical engineer. Even then, s/he may not understand ES well enough to provide correct counsel. Dear Beau,
It makes complete sense what you are saying about picking up stray voltage, so will not try it. Thanks for the good suggestions. Got them at my local Red Wing shoe store. I noticed a very slight improvement in my symptoms after getting these, but I was never sure if it was these or something else I may have started doing at about the same time. One thing was for sure -- they stopped all the electric shocks I was getting! Marc |
