Dr. Magda Havas writes:
People who fly on airplanes are exposed to the following types of radiation:
1. cosmic radiation: which is worse at higher altitudes and is ionizing.
2. magnetic fields (400 Hz on planes): which is worse near the front ofthe plane and decreases near the tail end. It is very high in thecockpit. I've measured it on one plane (prior to 911) and the highestvalues (above 100 mG) were at the window (due to a heating element tokeep window flexible) and in the electrical conduits that ran behindboth pilot and copilot.
3. radio frequencyradiation: associated with radar and their communication system. Wenow have WiFi on some planes. I recently measured it and will bereporting on the findings on my website: www.magdahavas.com.
4. scanners: we are all exposed when we walk through the scanners at airports (as are the employees).
Sothe amount of radiation to which passengers and crew are exposed isincreasing on flights and this is not a good thing. Air Canada isdoing some monitoring of employee exposure and I hope the results willbe made publicly available. However, I'm not holding my breath as theUS airlines conducted a similar survey several years ago and the uniondidn't release it to their pilots and flight attendants so why shouldCanada be any different.
Until we have peoplein positions of authority who truly care about passenger and employeehealth and safety and are familiar with the harmful effects of thisradiation, little is likely to change.
TheONLY good news about these new scanners is that they are raisingconcerns among the public andemployees and more people are wantingconcrete information about the health studies at these new frequencies. . . that have not been done!
