> Thanks a lot. We might keep the DSL for now. My daughter says it's a reliable connection.
Yes, I like DSL too -- I tried cable internet briefly, but found
it much worse (ES-wise) than DSL, although this may have been due
to our cable not being properly grounded at the time, or perhaps
it was a poor-quality cable modem (the Cisco modem we use seems
like commercial/industrial quality).
> I looked up the Cisco manual. What is a POTS splitter & do you use it?
Umm, that's a two-to-one phone jack adapter, isn't it? We do NOT use
this, as the modem has a phone line in (to wall) and phone line out (to phone).
We have to put a DSL filter on the line out.
> Is the POTS for multiple computers?
"POTS" = plain old telephone system.
> The NetGear fast switch is showing a need for a router & External Firewall?
We just use the firewall software on our computers. And
the DSL modem counts as the router.

Yes, our Internet Service Provider lists DSL modems from ActionTec,
2Wire, and Cisco. They've got setup guides for each (as I recall,
setting these up isn't trivial):
