New forum

Hi all, I grow increasingly concerned about the future viability of the current platform we are on, especially now that they have dropped email replies and are downsizing their services.  So I've just set up something on groups.io, which isn't going anywhere.  All we now need are some members.  :-)

Nabble is really basic but I like how fast it loads plus it's easy to use.

Does Groups.io have a better chance to have member posts ranked in Google?  That's one way to increase readership. I don't think Google ranks posts located in the Facebook group, right?

Some other ideas to increase involvement:

-In forum settings, max out the length of time people stay logged in; or  upon login, give them a checkbox allowing them to stay logged in

-Does Groups.io have a way to receive digests via email?  Don't see it on this site.  A good idea is to remind new subscribers to be sure and receive digests daily.

-Do a little SEO... I don't know much about SEO but when someone starts a thread it would help Google notice it to just link to it from another site. Right now a lot of good threads aren't listed in Google.

I find Nabble easy as well, although my experience with others indicates that not everyone finds it so easy to use.

The Facebook groups are generally all "private", so your Facebook friends don't see any of your discussions, so no, they wouldn't show up on Google either.

There are daily email digest options on groups.io.   As it seems to have been competing in the same space as YahooGroups (now gone) and Google Groups (still here, but no real improvements made to it in years).

I see some posts showing up in Google from other groups on Groups.io.  You might want to check if there's an admin setting on Groups.io that makes sure posts will show on Google?

I linked to all three groups from http://www.FreeKindPosters.org.  That will help tell Google to index them more.

Anyone who wants to help increase involvement can use something like this on their Facebook page or other web pages:

  ---------------------------------------------------------

Having personally experienced "ES" (Electromagnetic Sensitivity) I'm responding by helping others find answers.  You can discuss ES at ES-forum.com, this FaceBook Group and this Groups.io Group. If you believe you may be affected by EHS, it's worth joining one or more of these.

Will the messages from this forum be imported to the new one ?
Perhaps as an archive, apart from fakebook group content in case members from there are moving to the same place, but still accessible.
Starting from zero has of course clearly a disadvantage.

I don't know if there is a way to import messages from here to there.  So the idea is to keep this available as long as we can.  Certainly one of the big selling points with Nabble for me originally was that I could move all messages from YahooGroups to Nabble, so nothing was lost.   If that can be done with groups.io, I don't know.  I believe that some YahooGroups transferred all their stuff there, so maybe it's possible, maybe not.  I'll have to look into it.

... but my main concern here is that we wake up one day and this forum is gone, and never comes back.  And there's nothing we can do about it.  That's what I'm trying to guard against.  So even if you don't join the new group now, you might want to bookmark it for future reference.  :-)

Re: New forum

It might be a good idea to cross-link the three discusion URLs.
For exaple, mention the IO group right after where you say "This forum is a continuation of the "eSens" Yahoo Group (esens@yahoogroups.com), which was abandoned due to changes at Yahoo Groups."

And maybe say what each group is best for, e.g. FB Group for social media, here for archived and ongoing threads, new IO group for the future.
