Hi Paul,

It is not a metal lamp, it is ceramic. I had a metal desk lamp that used
halagen bulbs and it was terrible. Most desk lamps are metal!! So this one is a
short lampshade time lamp without the lampshade, the only thing I could find
that wasn't metal. (At Good Will for a few bucks

Yes some plastic holders do give of fumes where the bulb gets to close to
the plastic retainer or use of to high wattage bulb. ie giving off to much
heat. If you have a metal one make sure the lamp is earthed ! especially if it is
metal but yours is ceramic so that's ok, that said I allways go for earthed
to drain off the bulb cap and any metal light holder from there if you really
want to go rolls royce then you need sheilded cable and quality plugs and so
on. lastly wattage is no measure of brightness, just as a CFL bulb at
11watts can give off equivelant 40watts and so on, so if you could get an array of
low watt LEDS you could bring these close to the work area and get quite good
light also leds in halogen type fittings have a mirrored back so rflecting
the light better and also you dont look directly at it. I noticed some
interesting leds on Ebay designed for fish aquariums worth a look.

Hi, Kathy,

Marc was right on the spelling--it is "Chromalux".  And, it could be you would do better with a regular bulb--we are all somewhat different, so justbecause we like them it doesn't mean it will work for you (but it might).  Also, have you thought of the possibility of buying a solar light that you stick into your lawn?  These sell around here for $10

I can try that (Chromelux full spectrum bulb). Actually the bulb I am usingis the new GE Reveal bulb that gives off whiter or bluer light. I wonder if this bulb is a problem! I should try a regular one. I do want to try stetzer filters at some point. Just can't afford to ezperiment now or I won't have damage deposit to rent a new place. I think it most important to get out of here. So I'll buy a regular incandescent first and remember to try reversing the plug too. Then I'll look for a Chromelux full spectrum bulb. Thanks too for the VitaminShoppe. com idea.

Oops, sorry, Kathy,

I obviously hit that key again!  lol  (The one that causes the email tobe sent against my wishes.)  I think I was mid-sentence, telling you that around here you can buy outside solar landscape lights for about $8 to $10 apiece.  When relatives of mine were going thru the aftermath of Katrina, they used these inside until their power was restored.  They just put them outside each morning to charge and brought them in at night.  That said, I don't know whether you would react to a light like this or not (I have never tried them, personally.)

Bless you, dear,
Diane

Yes, there is certainly no guarantee that the Chromalux bulbs will work,
but at least you know they are being used by at least 2 other ES'ers
who are happy with them. :-)

I've seen these for sale at a local hardware store, but I mostly buy
them online at:

Re: My whole living room is hot!!

These lights, Kathy, are the ones you see in people's yards--sometimes theyline the driveway.  They have stakes on them to push into the ground andthey either are on top of the stake or they are like lanterns which hang from a hook on the stake (like a shepherd's hook).  Either type you can bring in; I don't know how bright they are--I'd think brighter than a flashlight, tho!  My relatives just moved potted plants in and out of their house, I think.  I thought it was a novel idea that I might use if we go off-grid this summer.  I have no personal experience however, yet, with these.

Something I do have experience with is battery candles, but they are not light enough to use to do art--I could do sudoku puzzles by them, tho.  I have the kind of candles that look like a real candle and are wax, but they run by battery.  We use 2 of them as night lights in the bathroom so we don't have to turn on lights at night.

I should try a regular one. I do want to try stetzer filters at some point. Just can't afford to ezperiment now or I won't have damage deposit to rent a new place. I think it most important to get out of here. So I'll buy a regular incandescent first and remember to tryreversing the plug too. You can also use a good quality car battery (obviously take precuations) and
run 12volt halogen downlighter type bulb say 20watt version but you would
definitely need solar cell backup to trickle charge the battery. Again do the
maths or get the battery retailer to do it for you. You can rig up the bulbs
in a manner of inovative ways.

Good luck, Kathy,

Hope it works for you.  I thought of another couple ideas--my dad gave us these little "stick up" lights--they are disks you stick on the wall, etc.  You push on them to turn them on.  They are fairly bright and I think they are only a couple dollars a piece.  And also I used to have battery powered book lights--gave them to my nieces for when they had to do a show in the dark (they are musicians, as was I, at one time).  They worked great.  I think I bought theirs at QVC.com, but at least on of them I got in the book store--that one had a rechargeable battery pack.  Again, not sure whether these are bright enough to do art projects, but they are bright enough to read by and do embroidery, etc, as I used mine for that years ago.

Re: My whole living room is hot!!

spiralwindintrees
Hi Diane,

Thanks for the further ideas. At certain stages doing the artwork I don't need as much light as others. I have just started something new and have been getting by with the regular incandescent lamp further away (and only at night when I can't use direct light from a window) and it hasn't been that bad. This as been working okay, though I WISH I had better light. But once Ibegan with the color I need some pretty darn good light or I really can't see to get the effect I want.

I have never heard of these stick on lights. I don't think the battery powered book lights would do it. So far I haven't implemented anything. Feelingstressed about moving and it has been getting all my attention. Also my finances are so tight what with needing to save for a new damaged deposit I'mnot willing to part with money that I'm not sure will get me something better than what I have.

I did ride my bike around the mature/senior manufactured home park a few days ago and it is a pretty decent place with lots of trees. I'm ready to make an appointment to try and set something up, however my lease ending July 27th is still far away, except my current landlord needs 60 days notice to move and I sure don't want to give that with securing a place.

Also my landlord called yesterday asking if I had decided yet whether I wasgoing to sign the new lease. I told them I had not made a decision yet. Then they asked if they could show my apartment the following day!! I reminded them that my current lease says I have 60 days to give notice, but they still wanted to show my apartment. I don't understand legal stuff and am notclear if they can actually do this. I just reminded them that I had been there since 1990 and I would like a little more respect from them. She then said she wouldn't show my apt.

This type of thing just is not healthy for someone with PTSD and recoveringfrom cancer. I really don't understand the way businesses operate so inhumanely. I thought the lease was supposed to protect me as well!! As bad as Ineed to move from here I can't live on the street and it really is a bit to expect the manufactured home park to hold a place for me for 3 months just because my current landlord wants to rent my place so far ahead of time. I feel stuck between a rock and a hard place.

I'll keep all these good ideas for lighting in the back of my head and onceI get past this current stressful spot I'll look into some. Actually if I line up a manufactured home first it might give me a better idea of how much lighting I will need to come up with period. I don't think some of these old trailers have any build in overhead lights.

Hoping to see the inside of some of these homes next week and secure something if possible. My friend who lives there says they are renting out the empty ones pretty fast. It is a large park though so if they are hoping to rent all the empty ones (after they fix them up to be livable) I should thinksomething will work out. I'm just so nervous after the phone call from my landlord. It really hurts to be treated so poorly from a landlord I've beenrenting from close to 19 years. Business is Business. That makes NO sense to me. No wonder the world is such a mess. I better go find a more appropriate forum where I can rant!!! #$@*

Thanks again. Hoping to have good news soon. A secured home in this park and little or no EMF hazard there!! Then I can relax.

Kathy

I should try a regular one. I do want to try stetzer filters at some point. Just can't afford to ezperiment now or I won't have damage deposit to rent a new place. I think it most important to get out of here. So I'll buy a regular incandescent first and remember to try reversing the plug too. Then I'll look for a Chromelux full spectrum bulb. Thanks too for the VitaminShoppe. com idea.
