I have occasionally got different readings in this house. I thought
the meter was faulty but I have tested it at other houses and have
seen average readings so it's no the meter.

What I don't understand is how a cottage on the same street could
have such different readings (in the 200's - still quite high).

It's on the same street, but does it use the same transformer? (that
cylindrical thing on the utility pole). The problem could be at
the transformer.
