We are soliciting your political support for the success of this project so that it can help people suffering from Environmental Sensitivities by giving them adequate living conditions. Projet : 40 community housing units with services, at Mille-Isles, (volet III). Client : L’Association pour la santé environnementale du Québec (ASEQ) File number SHQ : ACL-00724 January 21st 2013 Montréal Dear MNA, The Environmental Health Association of Québec (ASEQ-EHAQ) provides help and support for people suffering from Environmental Sensitivities (ES) «i,ii». Keeping with our Mission, ASEQ has been working for many years to provide healthy housing for people suffering from ES. Recovery of this illness cannot happen without a healthy environment in which to live and work. This is impossible due to the extreme poverty which often results from this condition. According to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation more than 85% suffering from ES recover once they have healthy housing. «iii» ES is a disabling illness «iv» which can be caused by a large exposure to chemicals, mould and electromagnetic fields, or smaller exposures over time. Due to the ensuing disability, people suffering often lose their jobs and are therefore unable to afford treatments which are presently not available in Quebec. They are also unable to find healthy homes. This vulnerability leads to a downward spiral of chronic and often severe ill-health, poverty, isolation, exclusion and even abuse. The person falls through the cracks and is easily forgotten. According to Statistics Canada, 2010, 179,000 Québécois have been diagnosed with Chemical Sensitivities by a health professional and this number is increasing. In Canada between 2005 and 2010, there has been an increase of 34%. Studies «v» also show that addressing this issue with appropriate health and social services saves health care dollars. Lack of recognition also causes many physical, emotional and social harms. The project of 40 units that we want to construct will be affordable and built with construction materials that emit the least amount of chemical vapours. The idea behind the design, ventilation, direction and placement of buildings is to ensure good air quality. Not only will the building be considered ecological, but after it is built its nature will be preserved since the inhabitants will use only non-toxic products for all their needs. This will be a model for building, developing and living in a sustainable community which would include among other things, organic gardening. This will be a model that Québec will be proud to have. A gracious benefactor has donated 25 acres of land to ASEQ to build these homes. We will always be indebted and thankful for his generosity. Certain countries provide adequate health and social services to people suffering from ES. Now is our chance in Québec to take the lead and reach out to people in hopeless despair. To give them an affordable home. To show our fellow Québécois that we care. ASEQ has made a request for funding from the Société d’habitation de Québec, from the accèslogis program. We are soliciting your political support for the success of this project so that it can help people by giving them adequate living conditions. We are counting on your help and thank you for your kind consideration in this matter.
