LCD monitors

Hi all,

I found this article on the design considerations
of a florescent backlight for an LCD monitor:

http://www.designnews.com/article/CA473494.html

So, the backlight requires 700 volts to run, and
operates at a frequency of 50,000 Hz! Plus
has an DC->AC inverter. So I can see why this
would bother some people.

Hopefully, the new flatscreen technologies coming
next (LED backlighting, organic LED, etc.)
will operate at lower voltages or lower
frequencies.

Some info starting to emerge..
http://news.com.com/Photos+Shining+the+light+on+LEDs/2009-1041_3-5630826.html

Look at the quality difference!

LED TV's (and I assume Computer screens) will show 107% of the
available NTSC video color spectrum, current LCD's show 70-80
% and CRT's show 80-90% from memory..

Pity about the price..

And I wonder if LED's operate at another frequency that is also annoying!

And I also wonder that if LED'sgenerate so much heat that they need
fans, then how much current draw is there..

Oh well - mybe OLED's are going to appear one day..

Cheers
Pete

OLEDs have already appeared on cellphones, digital
cameras, MP3 players, and there have been all sorts
of promises about computer monitors "coming soon".
However, as far as I'm aware, no computer monitor
has actually been released.

But as soon as one has, I will be checking it out.
(assuming that it doesn't cost some ridiculous
amount of money)
