Ion channelopathies...

Elysia Drew
Hi, fellow EHSers. A nurse friend of mine, who has mitochondrial dysfunction, said it sounds strongly like I have ion channelopathies (such as calcium &./or potassium ion channelopathy), & these could be contributing heavily to the EHS. Anyone know about "alternative" treatments for this, since there's pretty much no standard medical treatment for it? BTW, could people please remember to change subject heading in e-mails if you're going to give an off-subject response, as I can only be on computer for a max. of 10 min/day, & it's physically painful to sort thru all the e-mails.

THanks very much. :)

Hi Elysia,
YOu need to take extra Calcium and for the Postassium, Bragg's Raw Apple Cider Vinegar (with the mother) is an excellent source of Potassium.
Emf's cause calcium leaching; basically this means you need to take more Calcium. Dandelion Tea is also a rich source of calcium.

Hi Elysia

Zinc, Manganese and Magnesium are natural calcium channel blockers (also cadmium and nickel - but they are toxic metals..)

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1847182

Then also there is a product called: Membrane Complex by Hans Nieper, which apparently heals the cell membranes. It is a mixture of calcium, potassium and magnesium AEP.  (Evie has reported before about her success with calcium AEP. And also if you have pathogens which would normally 'eat' the minerals - they don't seem to be fed by the AEP forms of these minerals (as Evie mentioned before, they might even be acting as a 'trojan' horse in killing the pathogens).

http://www.amazon.com/Membrane-Complex-100-Hans-Nieper/dp/B004SSWWCO/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1321205015&sr=1-1-fkmr0

and re Hans Nieper:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Alfred_Nieper

Zinc in high enough doses (50 g of elemental zinc three times a day will also oppose the absorption of copper, and thus in time reduce it.  Vitamin C will also chelate it, and molybdenum and manganese also reduce it.  I read in another forum somebody saying that her naturopath said all people he sees that have EMF sensitivity are copper toxic.  My EMF problems became much worse when I started on estrogen, which raises copper levels.  If you are copper toxic, it will take months though to reduce the copper levels with zinc (and you need to take it three times a day well away from food - and also be careful not to become copper deficient).

Then also I think mast cells play a big role in ES - as per Prof Olle Johannson's work. I think they're in the skin, thyroid, heart, kidneys and liver of ES people - and when they're triggered, they release histamine and serotonin and other chemicals into the skin and other organs, causing a lot of the symptoms, and damage.  I've been using ketotifen (a non US mast cell stabilizer, Cimetidine (an H2 antihistamine) and sodium ascorbate (non-acidic form of vitamin C, which in high dosages is a natural antihistamine and mast cell stabilizer) with some success in the symptom department, but unfortunately it hasn't made me less ES.

I hope in time with treating the cell membranes with that membrane complex (and alkalizing at the same time), reducing copper (and I think I should be addressing mercury as well but I don't know how), and doing mast cell stabilizer stuff, that my ES will get better.

So all this is more theory at the moment, I dream of the day I can post here and tell everybody my ES went away and what helped me do so!

Hi Elysia and Kikkie,

What Kikkie wrote is excellent, excellent info, Elysia.  Only one thing tho--zinc should, generally speaking, be kept to 50 mg/day for long-term use.  I think perhaps the 50g that Kikkie mentioned might be a typo?

The only reason one would want to take more than 50mg/day (or 50mgs 3X per day or more) is if one has a special circumstance, such as Wilson's Disease, and needs to oppose copper, etc.  It is possible that this is the case with some of us at Esens.  It is also possible that higher doses of zinc could help with channelopathies; however, one should always go slowly and be cautious about adding too much of any one nutrient, especially minerals, as some of these can be toxic.  Adding more than recommended doses should not be done unless you are adding ONLY that one nutrient and can carefully monitor any new or worsening symptoms and tie it back to that.  Otherwise, it is easy to make your health worse instead of better.

I also wanted to address your living conditions, Elysia.  Surely there is a better way to live.  When you go to the library to work on your computer (I think you said you do this), why not talk to the librarian there and explain your situation?  She surely could point you to people who work with the homeless, or homeless shelters.  These shelters might not work for you, however, many who work with the homeless would perhaps be willing to find a more suitable home for you.

Good luck, Dear; I hope you can find a better home soon,
Diane
