I am to speak next Sunday at the memorial of a friend who had MCS and EMF. His widow
wants me to explain the conditions for their acquaintances who had never heard of it until it was mentioned in his obituary. He did not speak about it with many people. He got sick about the time he retired, so he didn't have to let anyone at his work know. I can explain MCS pretty easily, but really don't know how to explain EMF.I am a writer of a newspaper column in which I easily discuss MSC, but even though I've had EMF symptoms for a year and a half, I have never mentioned it. I guess I'm tooafraid they will send out the guys in the white coats to take me to the funny farm. "I can feel electromagnetic waves in my head when the refrigerator turns on," just sounds like something one would see in a sensational tabloid next to a story about being abducted by aliens. Most of what I've found in my research is too technical for me to get into in a 3 minute speech. (I get three minutes to explain MCS and three to explain EMF). Has anyone else found a way to explain this? I'm not even sure I personally understand how chemical sensitivity and EMF are connected. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Mariann |

It is a condition where people have immediate bad reactions to common sources of radiation -- like cellphone towers, cellphones, computers, florescent lights, television sets, telephones, etc. In the more severe cases people can't even stand the wiring inside their walls. For the most part, people have to just avoid these things, although in some cases people have found solutions which allow them to overcome this illness and go back to a normal life. ES seems to be related to chemical sensitivity in that people often get them together, which would imply a common trigger -- like an immune system which is struggling due to a variety of possible factors... accumulation of heavy metals in the system (mercury, lead, aluminum), accumulation of toxins/poisons in the body (pesticides, drugs, chemicals), or viruses, infection, etc. It could also be related to MS, in that the myelin sheath surrounding the nerves could be degraded, making one more sensitive to such fields. I find the accumulation of heavy metals to be an interesting theory, as increased metal in your body could make you an increased conductor of electricity, which could indeed make you more sensitive to electricity than a normal person. (I've even found that I will set off a metal detector with hardly any metal on my person, while the next person who is obviously wearing more metal than I won't set it off at all!) Marc |
