Salut all. This is kind of an emergency question. Trying to get a break from Silver City, NM by going to Elephant Butte Lake State Park, which is just west of Truth or Consequences, NM, kinda in the "center" of the state. I'm due to visit the park by 10 a.m. tomorrow morning (Friday) & only last nite foun dout that Elephant Butte Lake is fed by water from the Rio Grande, which is currently overflowing with snow melt. This is bad b/c Colorado, where the Rio Grande begins, is currently FRACKING for URANIUM (as well as nautral gas & oil, etc.). I'm wondering how far downstream the uranium, nat. gas (i.e. fracking products) & other fracking chemicals might travel. Truth or Consequences, NM is about 300 miles south of Durango, Colorado, which is just about where the Rio Grande begins. Not sure if I have to be concerned about uranium or other stuff being in the water that far down. Ideas, anyone?

HI Elysia, There's no sure answers here. I've read 25 miles, and longer. It depends on rock formations, vertical or horizonatally fracking, and of course how close the fracking areas are to other bodies of water. Sorry I can't be more specific. Lizzie, I forgot to say: The water is traveling about 300 miles from Durango, CO to Truth or Consequences, NM, but it's NOT traveling underground; the Rio Grande is an open water river, so I don't know if you or anyone else in the group knows anything about how far fracking stuff travels on open water rivers (rather than fracking contamination in water that travels underground, which is said to purify itself every 10 feet or so). If anyone has any ideas, I've got another 50 minutes here (at library) & then I'm back to a place w/ no Internet.
