Has anyone used fiber-optic to ethernet media converters?

Article One
Hey all,

I've been considering using (if I can find it affordably) fiber optic cable
instead of ethernet.  I know you need to use a "media" converter at either
end to turn the light pulses from the fiber optic into ordinary signals that
travel along a short piece of ethernet cable to the computer and modem.

Can anyone comment on how electrically dirty these media converters are when
they convert fiber optic signals into ethernet signals?

I know that they use switching AC-DC power supplies, though I've seen some
that are powered directly through the computer's USB port.  Could this be a
clean enough solution, since the USB ports are putting out DC electricity
directly from the computer's mainboard?

I'd really appreciate your help.  Thanks!

R.

The fiber optic USB extension I was just talking about has the same
type of converters and also a DC "wall-wart" to power the far
converter, and it seems fine.  This is actually my most tolerable
USB extension cord for USB 3G/wi-fi modems, but that may be because
the modem is so far away from me using this solution.

But yes, the noise generated the converters was a concern of mine
as well before I bought this cable.  But I can assure you, a
nearby 3G modem is far worse... :-)

Hi Marc,

Thanks for your reply.

This is the sort of fiber optic media converter I'm talking about (in fact,
it's the very model I'm considering, since it's one the least expensive!):

Have any more thoughts?

Thanks,

Take care,

R.

That appears to be larger and more elaborate than the little fiber
optic to USB converters on the cable I've got, so I have no idea...

Thanks for checking, anyway, Marc.

It seems I'll just have to try it if I spend some time on a possible
property, since I need 'net access for the bit of work I can do online. (I
explored Ethernet cable, but since it'd run outdoors and the land owner's
not amenable to burying the ethernet, or using necessary surge protectors
for safety, plus would want it to run parallel to a noisy AC line - fiber's
a better choice.)

I hope that all I'd have to do is run the USB-power cable through a big
ferrite torroid to clean it up.

Cheers,

R.
