Glasgow looks to pioneer wireless internet

WIRELESS internet access could be made available everywhere in Glasgow
under a multi-million pound proposal.
Steven Purcell, the leader of Glasgow City Council, has ordered
officials to examine the pros and cons of a system which would create
a giant wifi "hotspot".

The blanket coverage would allow people to use laptop computers to
surf the web and send large files at high speeds.
Mr Purcell is enthusiastic about the idea after studying a pilot
scheme under way in London's Soho.

The Westminster City Council wifi system has digital CCTV cameras,
which produce evidence-quality footage, attached to lampposts. The
equipment has been used by police to catch drug dealers operating in
the street.

Installing conventional CCTV cameras generally takes at least three
months but the wireless network enables such cameras to be put in
place – or redeployed – within 24 hours.

In Westminster, using the wireless digital cameras instead of
traditional versions also resulted in a 30% cost reduction – saving
millions of pounds.

The network enables the local authority's mobile workers, ranging from
street wardens to environmental health officers, to access information
and file reports from their personal digital assistants as they go
about their tasks.

Although there are already wireless hotspots in libraries, coffee
shops and many hotels across Glasgow, the network is not yet seamless.

Detailed proposals are expected to be drawn up.

Last week, Google and EarthLink agreed to jointly provide free
citywide Wi-Fi access in San Francisco that may be operational
later this year.
