FCTs/ Premicells & Recycling Toxic Workplaces

Roger Moller - Electric Forester
FCT:
Most people have never heard of a premicell or a Fixed Cellular Terminal. It is a cellphone connected to an office telephone system that allows calls to be automatically routed over the cellular network thus making cellular-cellular calls which are generally cheaper. Typically FCT's are used by companies to keep in touch with their sales force and field staff, all of whom generally have at least one cellphone on the same network. If the FCT is close to a steel building support member or concrete wall, the FCT could be operating at maximum power for most of the day.

If people sit near the FCT (perhaps hidden in a roof void, worse still under a metal roof) they could be spending their days constantly bathed in its signals as everyone in the office makes use of it. Lifetime doses for the people unfortunate enough to sit near it can then easily be clocked up, and an office may have more than one FCT in the same or different locations.

FCTs go under a number of euphemisms: GSM Gateway, Cellroute, F250m etc. but who is going to ask about such things in a job interview?

Toxic Workplace:
Some offices have a desk/workstation with particularly high staff turnover. The newbie gets assigned 'the' desk which of course is vacant. Over time their performance deteriorates and Human Resources are told to improve their recruitment process. Eventually another newbie arrives and so the toxic workplace cycle repeats itself until somebody figures out what's going on.

Cellphone Deskphone:
Another innovation is the GSM Deskphone which looks like an ordinary desk phone except perhaps for a little antenna. It uses a SIM card just like a cellphone but it never moves away.

By such innovations, the opportunity for the ES/EHS to work in offices is yet further reduced.
