Cordless/Corded Phones/Answering machine

I almost dread this the most, as I've remained with old ones all this time and do spend time on the phone. I have worn them all out, the old styles, so am getting new ones, would like features, and have the same questions. Can I get one that will work 2 buildings over, as I had once, and could tolerate?

My trusty Panasonic ans machine has hung in for years, but may not forever.Is there any such thing as regular tapes anymore, voice activated, with plenty of time, or a thing of the past?

If there is an older brand/model that you know that works for you, then perhaps you
could do a search for one on eBay?
