Just wanted to add that you can also get stand alone caller ID boxes.

ESther
Corded, stand-alone answering machine:

http://www.amazon.com/AT-1739-Corded-Digital-Answering/dp/B000VWJ210/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1342764541&sr=8-2&keywords=answering+machine

I think Target sold this one last year in the store, but don't know if
they still do.

I have a corded Panasonic office model KX-TS880 w/ caller ID and
speaker phone.  It uses batteries for the caller ID, and phone book.
It also has a headset port for a corded headset.  I bought it online
last May.  I have a very, very old stand-alone answering machine (20
years), which thankfully is still working.
