Connecting 2 PCs with some kind of cable

f_gelber
In California, I used to have a cable that connected my two PCs. I lost the cable when I moved, so I went to Staple's and asked them for a cable and how to connect the computers. They insisted that in Arizona it was not possible to connect without a router and they sold me a Netgear web safe hardwired router. I did not feel well when I started using this router. Can someone please instruct me on what cable to buy, where to buy it, and how to connect the two computers. Thank you.

For one, you should never believe anything told to you by a
retail employee.  :-)

For two, a simple Internet search will usually find you the
answers you are looking for.  I just did a search, and found
that an ethernet crossover cable is all that is needed to
connect two PC's together (no router).  Here are the
instructions:

Oh, and a second search revealed that you connect two PC's together
via certain serial or USB cables:

These may be too specialized to find at Staples... you may need to
instead buy them online.
