I gave up on using computer speakers, and instead am using a mini stereo system for PC sound output.
That is, the headphone out on the PC goes to an "Aux Input" on a mini CD receiver (old model made by TEAC, with a class B amp, not the newer pulse-width modulated class D/T amps).
Then the mini CD receiver has speaker output terminals, and I run speaker wire to old-school bookshelf speakers (old & small speakers from ADS).
Although the speakers are both sides of the monitor, the mini CD receiver is a few feet away (by the PC), as that doesn't need to be close to me.
This setup has been much better for me than in the old days when I used "computer speakers", as the power bricks & amplifiers in those can be pretty nasty.
