Johns." <[hidden email]> Technically, most white LED's do use the phenomenon of fluorescence to make white. However, they do not use gas discharge so they don't need high voltage. That means they can be much quieter electrically and they are used in scientific screen rooms (faraday cages). So electrically LED's have little in common with fluorescents. In terms of spectral characteristics, most are as bad or worse than fluorescents (they look white but in a prism not all the colors are there).
