Hi all,
In Israel there is a buzz now in the press regarding a British research that showed a connection between living next to electric wires and children getting Leukemia blood cancer. It turns out many many Israeli schools have wires right next to them. There is also a discussion regarding army antennas next to a little town which is claimed is responsible perhaps for the unprecedented rise in cancer there. The word of danger is starting to sink in. Yet, every Israeli holds on to his cell phone without care. I gave mine up since 1997. Wish I can find one that is less offensive, sometimes even I need to make a call from the road. To bad for me, but the good old buses in Israel are being replaced by new shiny ones, that are packed with electric currents. I measured more that 100 MillGuess . It made me feet hurt (the source is in the bus floor), and makes me feel I need to vomit. I am being excluded from culture, housing and transportation. hmmmm HIllel ----- Original Message ----- From: <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Thursday, June 09, 2005 1:39 PM Subject: [eSens] Digest Number 409 > > There are 2 messages in this issue. > > Topics in this digest: > > 1. I travel by train in Sydney Australia once a week for an hour each way.
I took my trust gaussmeter onboard one day, as teh trans are powered by overhead electrical cables. I sit downstairs, further away fro the wires, and ususally in a carraige that does not have one of the electric pickups on the roof. I measured fields up to and in excess of 100mG when accellerating and braking(!) and general background of 3-10mG, all well within the australian safety standard of 100mG (apparently) The journey wears me out, but I think of all those who travel every weekday on this transport - it cant not be affecting them! Interestingly, I have consistantly found that most sony erricson mobiles (that I have had to use on the odd occasion), dont seem to hurt my head like the other brands (especially the older models). I am involved with Digital TV here in Sydney and am now wondering what effect those signals might be having~! Hi Pete,
Your figures all sound pretty likely. For most overhead-wire electric trains the voltage is 25000 V a.c. , which will create plenty of fields. Typically there is also a big transformer under the pickups which turns the a.c. into d.c. to drive the electric motors to move the train (some modern trains use a.c. motors). The fields will be greatest when there is a big power draw like during acceleration. Possibly these trains also have "regenerative braking" which feeds power back into the wire when slowing down. Unfortunately (or fortunately), it probably isn't affecting the other passengers except to a slight or undetectable extent. People have been travelling on these trains, and driving them, all around the world for over 50 years with virtually no reported problems. That`s why it`s so tough for people in general to understand electrosensitivity - it`s so completely foreign to their experience. I find a good analogy is a nut allergy - 99.9% of people can eat nuts all day, every day, without any problems, but for a person with the allergy it is a very real danger! Hopefully we can gradually educate people about electrosensitivity in the same way. Of course if it becomes more widespread people might notice - but, unlike nut allergy, it doesn`t impinge on public consciousness so much because people don`t suddenly fall down dead as a result.
