Bare ground

Jade Scorpion

greetings all. I have been working on my house
recently and found that the wires of my house have a
"bare" ground, sheathed only with paper. is this
considered safe?

Re: Bare ground

Gary Johnson-3
In the USA, 120 volt wiring is typically done with three conductors,
one covered with black plastic, one with white, and one bare (or
paper), and all three enclosed in another plastic layer. The black
is "hot" and should be at a voltage between 110 and 125 volts, the
white is common, and may be at a volt or two depending on the current
flow, while the bare never has current flow unless something fails, and
thus is normally at exactly zero volts, as measured with respect to the
grounding lug in the main breaker box. It is considered safe. Just
don't touch it to the copper with the black insultation!
