I tried a "CarotenALL" supplement (a supplement with various carotenoids) that included astaxanthin - and - despite my high hopes - I had a negative reaction to it. It's hard to describe the nature of the negative reaction - but it was similar to what I've described before - a general "brain fog", or a "weird" reaction in my head/brain. I wasn't sure if it was some sort of "detox" reaction, and something that I might want to "push through" - or if my reaction was a sure sign to stay away from the supplement. I proceeded as though the latter were the case - I just gave up taking the supplement.
I had a similar reaction when I took a lutein supplement (that also included zeaxanthin). It seems that these carotenes just don't agree with me.
Having just read the Mercola article - what I could have been experiencing was a net pro-oxidant effect. Perhaps these carotenes were just "too much of a good thing". I had come across information only once before indicating that these carotenoids may have some sort of "paradoxical" effect - especially when you take a certain amount or take them in a certain concentration. Well, the Mercola article stated pretty much the same thing quite convincingly.
The Mercola article also states that astaxanthin is unlike the other carotenoids in that it cannot produce this "pro-oxidant" effect. If this is true, it may be worth trying a supplement with just astaxanthin alone.
