Hello all,
I was doing pretty well after putting down the 5 layers of aluminum foil and tile. There was actually one main cell phone in the house and then just those of the people who would visit regularly. ( I moved into an attic (3rd floor), last January.) This is a low income area where the homes are not connected, but extremely close to one another. I was told that there was about 8 cell phones and WIFI in the house on the right and about 6 cell phones and WIFI on the left. But there had been only one phone here with no WIFI router. When I first came the energy had felt better than any other place I had encountered since coming down with EHS back in 2007/08. Last month, a 22 year old male that lives in this house got a laptop and he doesn't have internet service. He knows this stuff make me sick, yet about a week ago he started leaching WIFI off of the neighbors signal and since I've encountered excrutiating discomfort. He'll claim that the signal is disabled, but I still can feel signal coming from his room. Last night was the first time that I was sick all night from about 8:30pm and I woke up today feeling like I was burning throughout the night. Is there anyway to actually disable the WIFI signal from an outside router once a laptop has utilized the outside signal. Is there anyway to completely turn the power off so that nothing gets in. The neighbors WIFI was rough from time to time especially when signals from the two houses blend. But with this kid leeching internet, I feel that the signal is still in the air even if he is not directly on the computer at that time. The computer light is on or flashing (maybe in stand-by?). Can anyone offer suggestions? Bill? Mark? Anybody? Looks like I'll have to move again-- but to where? This would be the 9th time in 4.5 years. Damn. It certainly isn't getting any easier and I hate living around these techno freaks (especially the youth and the poor-- they can be so belligerent in their ignorance). Help... Pam [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |
Just a thought..How about letting your neighbors know that there someone hacking into computers in your neighborhood using their unsecured wireless routers putting their computers at risk. You might suggest that they enable security and set a password.

That sounds interesting... Please tell me, is it illegal to tap into someelse's internet signal? Afterall, it is his laptop that's telling him where and to whom the signal belongs. Also, is it really considered hacking when that info is supplied by the computer you are using.
I wouldn't mind stepping up, but I need to know the legal conditions before taking a stand of that nature. Also, are you suggesting that one cannot disable a laptop's WIFI if connected to an out side source? Finally, do you know if the signal that comes from an outside router to your home is any more or less healthy than when it is from a router within the home. I am thinking of the logic that says the farther away the cell phone is from the signal the stronger the radiation or SAR will be. My laptop has the ability to turn off its wireless capability. I believe some laptops have a physical switch and others use the keyboard, i.e., press the Fn key plus another one simultaneously. This would be your first choice, of course, if this guy would do this for you.
On the legality of tapping into someone else's access point, I am not an attorney, but f would assume it would depend on the provider's plan document, state law, and FCC rules. Personally, I probably wouldn't go down this road or really even get combative. Instead, I would just assume most people would NOT want someone using their internet access and just anonymously inform them that this has been happening and suggest that they take steps to protect themselves before something bad happens to them like identity theft. Maybe put out flyers on people's doors?? People are more likely to respond to things when their self-interest is served (of course except protecting themselves from EMFs .) :) Identity theft is something most people know about and probably know someone it has happened to, or at least a fraudulent credit card charge. Hopefully, this is helpful... Jim --- In [hidden email], pamela clemonts <adiaha22@...> wrote: > > That sounds interesting... Hi Pam,

Thus you would need to touch and type on it, have physical possession of it, which is likely not possible, as it is in somebody else's room. Second, the owner of the laptop can choose to turn it back on, so you first need him to cooperate anyways. I'd go with the other idea, he is using somebody else's access point. There is a possibility that other person doesn't want this to happen. But if you get that one secured, there's not much to keep him from finding another access point, probably farther away. There are a lot of clever antennas now-a-days to overcome such minor inconveniences (parabolic reflectors). > Finally, do you know if the signal that comes from an outside router to your home is any more or less healthy than when it is from a router within the home. > The outside source will have a lower signal strength. But you're right the laptop may have to shout louder to be heard from farther away. So it depends on if the laptop has adjustable transmitting power or not. From what I've read, the non-mobile ones plugged into mains power, are configured or set to be transmitting as loudly as possible all the time. Stewart |

If the neighbor secures his network with a password, the youth won't be able to tap into it without knowledge of the password. It would be better if the youth could get on to the web by using an ethernet cord attached directly to a router with the wireless capabilities disabled. With this set up, the download speeds would be much faster and more reliable. That may be an attractive feature to him. It would be safer for others too. Cable would be another way to set up a direct non-wireless connection. Better yet, he could take his laptop elsewhere like to a McDonald's restaurant, and stay off line at home. Right on, this is the master plan. I want to get a wired router. I've been investigating online, but if anyone can recommend something (I guess four ethernet jacks would be great), please do. I thought I saw something from "D-Link" and maybe one by "Linksys". I'm trying to find one for less than $40. If you guys have any ideas please submit! The young man is a friend of mine, but you know they just cannot understand what we're talking about. Your suggestion was the one I've been moving towards. The boy just couldn't be that patient. Once he discovered that he could get a "freebie," it's been too tempting for him. It's the wide world of today. Thank you, again. Pam.

Four ethernet jacks would be on a "ethernet hub", or an "ethernet switch", which would be
connected to the DSL/cable modem. I think someone here once mentioned that one particular cable modem was more tolerable than another particular model? I know that I briefly had a Comcast modem that was horrible, or in retrospect it may have been the fact that my cable wasn't grounded at the time. For DSL, I use an old Cisco 678 modem which seems okay (you could probably only find one of those on eBay). Made before the days of wi-fi, so there is no wi-fi on it to turn off! Hey Marc,
Slow down for me, honey. Is there a difference between an ethernet hub and a wired router? Because I noticed that they are promoted separately. I have a modem from Comcast for the high speed internet set-up. It works ok without the router. A couple of years ago I lived in a place where there was a old fashioned wired router and we had Comcast. I recall that the internet would go down sometimes. Is that what you are referring to. Also, if he plugs a laptop (mobile) into a non-wifi router, I imagine that his laptop would still need to be wifi disabled, right? Thanks Marc. Okay, maybe I'm confused myself.... :-) It seems people use the words hub/switch/modem/router a bit sloppily, and sometimes incorrectly... I guess what you are calling a "router" would connect you to the cable/DSL on one end, and 4 computers on the other end? Which means it combines some of the functions of what I would call a modem and a hub or switch. I found the following article, which attempts to explain things (although perhaps makes things even more confusing): http://ask-leo.com/whats_the_difference_between_a_hub_a_switch_and_a_router.html Marc |
OK I'm not crazy. Thank you so much. I'll check out the article.
