Help with mystery external magnetic field source?

laurenfp
Hello, I am really hoping someone can help me identify the source(s) of the high magnetic fields (1.0-1.5mG during the day and 1.5-2.5 at night) in our home. We believe that there are multiple external sources as the levels are unaffected when the main circuit breaker is off. I do believe that the streetlight circuit is part of the problem because when the streetlights go on the Trifield TF2 readings jump by .7 mG. It is also important to note that the neighbor's backyard readings are higher than ours. I already spoke with our power company and they were receptive to my concerns but insisted that there is nothing amiss in the neighborhood power lines in our alley. They did replace the service line in our backyard but it made no difference.

I know that traditionally, external factors have been much more difficult to mitigate, but I am desperate as I have two young children ages 2 and 4 and we cannot move in the next few years. If anyone in this group, or outside of this group, might be able to help, I would be so appreciative.

You're probably right that it's coming from outside, but there are a few more things that you could try disconnecting to see if the field goes down:

- wired telephones with an internal battery

- newer digital thermostats with the same

- smoke detectors with both a battery and a wire

- Laptops plugged into very long ethernet cables

You could also use your meter to see if the field is stronger near your water meter or the main water pipe that enters the house from the outside.  Water meters sometimes have a battery, and metal water pipes allegedly can conduct 'noise' from outside sources.

Laurenfp, this is a hard situation and one that I went through 7 years ago.  I lived in a house where the magnetic field was around 0.3 mG in the morning and steadily climbed throughout the day usually peaking around 2.5- 3 mG at night.  My front yard and driveway would sometimes measure up to 20 mG at night along with neighboring yards, sidewalks, and streets.  After some detective work I found that it covered the whole subdivision and an adjacent one.  My neighbor and his wife had great difficulty walking, the 40 year old man across the street had trouble walking, and a 50 yr-old a few houses down had trouble walking.  My feet and legs began to hurt right after moving in and by 4 PM each day I felt like I had the flu.

Notified the power company about the high magnetic fields, and they sent out their power quality "engineer" who immediately handed me a print-out which claimed that 100-150 mG was permissible in NY and Florida!  I watched him as he took reads with his meter and saw 6 mG register outside my front door, yet he told me that he didn't see a problem.

I got a little hysterical with him, so he and another man spent some time marking different colored lines through yards and on the street.  He said he was marking the lines of various utilities.  After a few weeks he reported that the problem involved different providers and something about an open loop run, and he said there was nothing they could do about it.  I moved from the area.

I was told several months ago by a friend who still lives there who has trouble walking and frequently took Trifield reads, that the high magnetic fields were completely gone.  She has no clue how it happened.

At that rental house with the high magnetic fields, when a neighbor across the street spoke on his smartphone inside his garage the RF would ride the ground currents into my home on the electrical wires in the wall facing his house! I could pick this up with a Gigahertz Solutions HF35C.

My suggestion to you would be to see just how much of an area does this elevated magnetic field cover.  Perhaps document with video and meter how it rises .7 mG when the streetlights come on.  Take that info to the power company and see if they'll act on that.
